SPOTLIGHT ON IDAHO AUTHORS

“Special Stories: Short Stories on Youth with Disabilities and My Adventures Working in the Disabilities Field” by Mike Kelly; Vendue Books ($19.99 pbk/$6.99 e-book)

Travel with award-winning transition educator Mike Kelly through the ups and downs and ins and outs of his work within the disabilities field. Along the journey, meeting interesting kids with disabilities, famous professional athletes and everyday folk who make a difference—and discover the many abilities kids with disabilities actually have.

These thought-provoking and heartwarming stories are sure to entertain and educate, as well as dispel societal stereotypes. A good read for parents of children with disabilities, special educators and administrators, individuals with disabilities, workers in the disabilities field, and corporate diversity and inclusion professionals.

According to Kelly, while there are books on how to raise or teach a child with autism—or children’s books featuring a single character with a disability—there are no books featuring multiple kids with various types of disabilities, telling their stories and highlighting their successes and challenges, all in one book. That’s why Kelly decided to write and publish one himself, along the way promoting it and managing book sales.

Over the last fifteen years, Kelly has worked with hundreds of youth with a wide range of disabilities living across America—from South Carolina to Pennsylvania to New Jersey to Idaho to Illinois. During that time he has served as an employment specialist, job coach, event organizer and promoter, fundraiser, grant writer, teacher, mentor, and nonprofit business owner, helping to empower youth, dispel stereotypes, and build inclusive communities.
